Rise of the Tidal Island Queens, Mokuhanga/ Japanese Waterbased Woodcut Print , each series, edition 1/5, Awagami Hosho Select, 2023/ 2024

Series of evolving woodcut prints inspired by the XR work and VR experience with the same name. In the past I have always transformed analogue works into the digital realm, but this time I took the other way. The XR work of the Island Queens exists as an extensive digital world in Unity, and I took screenshots and transcribed those into the analogue world wood using Japanese woodcut, a beautiful but time-consuming printing technique using Japanese paper and water based colour.

Aurora Borealis Myths, Mokuhanga/ Japanese Waterbased Woodcut Print, edition 5/5, Awagami Hosho Select, 2024.

I spend March 2024 in Moskosel, Lapland/ Northern Sweden and witnessed the Northern Lights a couple of times. From that arose the idea to start a series of Japanese woodcut prints inspired by the traditional myths how Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights comes into being. One of them goes that during a dark night the swans flew too high up in the sky and their wings got all tangled up and frozen. They had to flap them intensely to become free again and this caused the patterns, vibrations and colours of Aurora.
