Photopolymer Etching on Somerset Satin, edition 5/5 (+ artist proof), Size 20.5 cm x 29.5 cm, 2025

The series of Photopolymer Etchings was developed over many years, evolving various iterations that manifested in different media outcomes. I initially approached this project as a photographer, then as a sculptor and installation artist, before ultimately choosing printmaking to create the final prints.

This series consists of a series of portraits based on the photographic documentation of my site-specific installation titled “Farewells” (2017). This installation featured large-scale cut-out photographs of travellers, bent and folded into three-dimensional forms. Groups of cardboard sculptures transformed a large area beneath railway arches into a station where people in transit could meet. The initial low-quality photographs taken for the sculptures were captured on public transport using my iPhone.

As I reviewed the photographic documentation, I became intrigued by how photographing the sculptural pieces from certain angles and under strong lighting created dramatic shadows. These shadows further distanced the sculptures from the original low-resolution images. The strong light emphasised the sharply cut outlines and the abstract quality of the images.

The Photopolymer Etchings introduce irregularities and a softer quality to the work, inviting viewers to examine the images and ponder how they were created.
