Multipanel tableaux, Japanese waterbased woodcut on Awagami Hosho paper, glue, wooden boxframe, 112 cm x 28 cm x 5,5 cm, 2026
The visuals are inspired by the surreal, hallucinatory world of Angela Carter’s prescient novel The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972), and particularly the character of Albertina, a beautiful and sensual shapeshifting woman of glass.
As a response I initially created digital videos that feature her avatar and through whom I investigate the transient nature of life, our deep connection to nature, and the cyclical processes of creation, destruction, and regeneration. Yet, I like to jump from the digital to the analogue. For both I use my eyes and my fingers and touch gestures.
For this multi-panel tableaux I have used the traditional Japanese Woodcut (Mokuhanga) technique to print transparent colour layers, Bokashi gradients and woodgrain patterns on Awagami Hosho Paper, which is ideally suited for folding the paper into three-dimensional shapes. Silhouettes and negative cutouts based on screenshots from the digital world along with three-dimensional forms, acquire depth through the interplay of shadow and light.
